In April 2013, 6 of us went on a 7 day intermediate mountaineering course (IMC)
in Lochearnhead, Scotland with other Scouts/Explorers from Hertfordshire.

We stayed at what used to be an old railway station but had been used as a Scouting base for Hertfordshire Scouts for over 50 years. On first 4 days we were going out on the hills with our groups and learning navigation skills, rope skills and even snow and ice axe skills because we were lucky enough to have a lot of snow! Each night we’d be taught something to help us on the mountains whether it was First Aid or the weather; these were vital for preparing us for the 3 day expedition that lay ahead of us at the end of the week.
On High Camp (where we stayed for 2 nights) it was a member of my group’s birthday on the 2nd day so, we climbed to the summit of Stùc a’Chroin – our first munro! When we arrived back at our camp we had birthday cake and played pass the very tightly sealed parcel and musical statues as I had brought my ukulele along. A very memorable birthday indeed!
Back at the station it was our last night so a 5 course meal was on the menu with a special treat of traditional haggis! The night was drawn to a close with entertainment from each party and finally a round of Kum Ba Yah. Leaving was the saddest part of the week because it had been just so amazing, we’d made new friends and learnt so many things. Lochearnhead will always be a part of us.
It was an incredible experience full of laughs a lot of cake but it wouldn’t have happened without all the leaders and support staff who volunteered their time to make our time such a great one!
No, they didn’t pay me to say that this time.
